# Media Banner

> A hero that shows an image or a video, with separate desktop and mobile versions, linking to one page.

Use **Media Banner** for a hero that can play a video, such as a new season film at the top of your home page. Each piece of content has a desktop and a mobile image, can add a desktop and a mobile video, and links to one page.

## Content per schedule

One banner at a time. Each banner you schedule has its own **Start date** and **End date**, and the block shows the one that's live now. See [When content goes live](/docs/scheduling/when-content-goes-live.md).

## What you schedule in Block Hero

On the block's page, click **Schedule content**. The **Schedule Media Banner content** form has these fields. **Content Name**, **Desktop Image** and **Mobile Image** are required.

| Field | What it does on your store |
| - | - |
| **Content Name** | For your reports only. Shoppers don't see it. |
| **Desktop Image** | Under **Images**: the banner image on desktop. |
| **Mobile Image** | Under **Images**: the banner image on phones. |
| **Desktop Video URL** | Under **Videos**: a link to a video file to play on desktop, such as `https://example.com/video.mp4`. The desktop image shows while it loads. |
| **Mobile Video URL** | Under **Videos**: a link to a video file to play on phones. |
| **Redirect URL** | Under **Link**: the whole banner links here. |
| **Image alt text** | Under **Link**: describes the image for screen readers. Block Hero fills it in from the link and shows **Auto-filled**. You can type your own. See [How alt text is filled in](/docs/blocks/overview.md#how-alt-text-is-filled-in). |

## How videos play

* Videos start on their own, with no sound, and loop. On phones they play in the page, not full screen.
* The desktop video plays on screens 750 pixels wide or more, and the mobile video on narrower screens.
* With only a desktop video, phones show the **Mobile Image**. With only a mobile video, desktop shows the **Desktop Image**.
* Before a video plays, the image for that screen shows in its place: the **Desktop Image** on desktop, the **Mobile Image** on phones.
* Use an .mp4 file.

## What you set in the theme editor

| Setting | What it does |
| - | - |
| **Block ID** | The ID you copy from the block's page in Block Hero. |
| **Above the fold** | Turn on when this block is the first visible section on the page, so it loads faster. Turn it off when the block sits below other content. On by default. |

Everything else follows your theme's styling.

## If the block shows a message in the theme editor

Media Banner shows these messages in the theme editor only. Shoppers see nothing in that spot.

| Message | What to do |
| - | - |
| **Add a Block ID in the block settings** | Paste the Block ID from the block's page in Block Hero. |
| **Block ID not found** | The ID doesn't match a block in Block Hero. Copy it again. |
| **This block ID is not a Media Banner** | Use the ID of a Media Banner block. |
| **Block disabled in the Block Hero app** | Turn the block back on. See [Turn a block on or off](/docs/scheduling/turn-a-block-on-or-off.md). |
| **Nothing is scheduled to show right now** | Nothing is live right now. [Create a schedule](/docs/scheduling/create-a-schedule.md) or check its dates. |
| **Media Banner requires a desktop image or video** | The live content has no desktop image or video. Add one. |
